About the PHQ-9

The Patient Healthcare Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) is a test used by mental health professionals and doctors to get a better understanding of how their patients feel, think, and behave.

The PHQ-9 helps them offer a diagnosis if the person has depression. This test was designed to give people a jumping-off point to understand their mental health and whether depression may be present.

The test includes several questions with answers that range from a score of zero to three, and addresses the length and severity of the symptoms and how often they occur.

Understanding Depression

Taking this “Am I Depressed? quiz can help fill in some gaps of information, but there are many aspects of depression people are unfamiliar with.

Depression can begin after a person experiences a troubling or traumatizing event, as a result of several triggers, or for no obvious reason. When it does, it’s important to seek a treatment program as soon as possible. This includes attending therapy sessions and exploring the use of prescription medications to help alleviate the person’s symptoms.

About 5% of U.S. Adults Feel Depressed Regularly

In 2024, a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that about 5% of adults in the U.S. reported feeling depressed regularly.

In 2023, about 40% of high school students said they experienced depressive symptoms. The numbers could be higher because people often feel embarrassed to discuss how they feel and worry about being labeled.
