Understanding Anxiety Disorders
At Robles Ranch, we recognize that anxiety disorders manifest differently in every individual. Our mental health professionals, some of the most experienced in the field, are here to provide insight, direction, and successful treatment. Anxiety disorders can be the result of anything from trauma, genetics, environmental influences, or alcohol and drug abuse. The most common anxiety disorders treated at our Santa Barbara anxiety treatment center are:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
GAD is marked by excessive and persistent worry regarding several facets of daily life. Symptoms are:
- Restlessness or feeling on edge
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritability
- Fatigue
- Muscle tension
- Sleep disturbances
Panic Disorder
Marked by recurrent and unpredictable panic attacks, which are usually accompanied by extreme physical symptoms such as:
- Racing heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Fear of dying or losing control
Social Anxiety Disorder
Also known as social phobia, this disorder consists of fear of social or performance situations that is extreme. Symptoms are:
- Fear of criticism or embarrassment
- Avoidance of social interactions
- Excessive self-consciousness
- Blushing, trembling, or sweating
Specific Phobias
A phobia is an irrational fear of a specific object or situation, e.g., flying, heights, or some animals. Avoidance of the feared stimulus typically disrupts daily routine.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
While often considered separately as a disorder, OCD is also highly associated with anxiety. It is characterized by intrusive distressing thoughts (obsessions) and ritualized behaviors (compulsions) to try and reduce the discomfort.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
A disorder of anxiety that occurs following exposure to or observation of a traumatic situation. Symptoms may involve flashbacks, nightmares, becoming overly alert, and feeling detached.
