What is a Personality Disorder?

Personality disorders are a type of mental health disorder that are characterized by tremendous difficulty in controlling a person’s moods and interactions with others. Personality disorders cannot be cured, but with the right type of effective treatment, the symptoms can be controlled.

Personality disorders cause people to have difficulty in how they perceive their emotions and actions, which results in experiencing upheaval in their relationships with family, friends, and others. Treatment from a licensed facility can help people understand how to alter their views and enjoy more fruitful and long-lasting relationships.

Common Personality Disorders

A person can experience any one of several types of personality disorders. This makes it important that they receive an accurate diagnosis of which one they have, so a treatment plan can be put in place to help them with their specific needs.

Common personality disorders include:

  • Borderline Personality Disorder: This disorder is characterized by difficulty regulating a person’s emotions and engaging in impulsive behaviors. The individual often has poor self-esteem and trouble forming healthy and lasting relationships.
  • Narcissistic Personality Disorder: This type of personality disorder causes the person to have an enlarged ego and perception that they are better than everyone around them. They seek constant admiration and compliments and have difficulty offering the same to others.
  • Antisocial Personality Disorder: This disorder is characterized by difficulty having healthy relationships with others. The individual acts in antisocial manners, including being rude and acting in ways that cause others to avoid them. The person blames others for their actions and the results of them.
  • Histrionic Personality Disorder: This disorder causes people to have unstable and uncontrollable emotions and outbursts. They rely heavily on feeling that others like and validate them and often act out if they feel they are not receiving the exact support they desire.
  • Avoidant Personality Disorder: This disorder is characterized by the individual feeling they aren’t good enough and often believe others are judging them, even if they aren’t doing so. They crave social interactions but are afraid they will be rejected and often isolate as a result.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder: A person with this disorder craves a sense of orderliness and cleanliness both in and outside their home. The repetitive attempts to gain the exacting control they want can be emotionally or physically exhausting and often interferes with all area of their lives. [Note: This is a separate type of mental health disorder than obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)].

What Causes Personality Disorders?

People develop personality disorders for different reasons. For some, it’s genetic because they have a family history of these disorders. There can also be subtle brain differences that cause a person to develop a personality disorder.

For many, these types of disorders are rooted in experiencing childhood trauma. This can include physical, verbal, or sexual abuse, witnessing violence, or being neglected. As well, children who are not taught healthy ways to cope with anger, fear, and other difficult emotions may end up having a personality disorder.
