What is Trauma?

When something traumatic happens to a person, they may be able to overcome the symptoms it causes on their own with time. For others, it’s not that simple. Their symptoms last a long time and overtake their lives.

Common events that can cause a person to develop a trauma-based disorder and require attending residential trauma treatment programs include:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Long-term illness
  • Serious accident
  • Physical abuse
  • Emotional abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Witnessing other people being abused
  • School, workplace, and other public shootings
  • Community unrest, such as riots
  • Military or wartime violence
  • Natural disasters, like floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes

Can Anyone Experience Trauma?

Trauma can happen to a person regardless of their age, race, nationality, gender identification, sexual preference, religious affiliation, or economic status.

Understanding the Nervous System's Response to Trauma

The type of chronic stress that occurs when a person has experienced trauma impacts their body. They can experience a disruption in their mind’s ability to produce dopamine, which may lead to depression or anxiety. Trauma can cause a person to have a fight or flight reaction to triggering situations, causing them to feel a surge of fear and want to escape to a place that feels safe.

  • Difficulty speaking about the event
  • Abusing alcohol or drugs
  • Nightmares
  • Difficulty sleeping

Types of Trauma

Upon acceptance to our program, we will perform an assessment to determine exactly what type of trauma disorder a person has. They include:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Approximately 6% of Americans will experience PTSD during their lifetimes. This includes both PTSD and Complex PTSD, which occurs when someone experiences two or more traumatic events.
  • Acute Stress Disorder: Experiencing trauma causes the person to have symptoms of stress that begin within a few days to four weeks after the event. If the symptoms are not treated, the person may develop PTSD.
  • Adjustment Disorders: Symptoms begin up to three months after a traumatic event occurs and end before six months.
  • Reactive Attachment Disorder: Children who are raised in unstable homes and/or experience trauma often have difficulty forming healthy bonds with their family members.

How Do I Know I Need Residential Treatment for Trauma?

Someone suffering from a mental health disorder to the extent they need residential trauma treatment programs has reached the point that their symptoms interrupt their ability to live their daily lives. They feel crippled by symptoms like depression, anxiety, and others that keep them from relaxing, enjoying a social life, connecting with others, and doing well on the job or at school.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Disorders + Trauma

Someone who goes through traumatic events may develop PTSD, but they can also experience depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. As well, they may begin abusing drugs or alcohol to cope with their traumatic memories. In both cases, the person is considered to have co-occurring mental health disorders. Robles Ranch is prepared to treat people who are diagnosed with them.

How is Trauma Treated?

Exposing someone to different types of therapy improves their ability to do well in treatment.

We offer the following types of therapy:
