Robles Ranch provides residential treatment in a luxurious setting that includes land filled with beautiful nature. This gives us room to include goats and pigs that are part of our pet therapy program. What is Animal-Assisted Therapy?

Animal-assisted therapy brings people and certain animals together as part of an approach to helping people with mental health disorders ease their symptoms. The therapist is trained in providing this type of therapy, and the right type of animal will be chosen that pairs well with each person.

Also known as pet therapy, it can also prove beneficial for people in treatment for mental health disorders. Animal-assisted therapy has been thoroughly researched and requires a person experienced in providing it to lead a person in this type of treatment.

Animal-assisted therapy is not the same as having an emotional support animal (ESA), which helps people with disorders such as anxiety or depression in their daily lives. It is also not a service animal, which helps people with physical disabilities.

Our Types of Animal-Assisted Therapy

Different types of animals can be used as part of animal-assisted therapy for mental health. Facilities that have a lot of land have room for horses, while smaller places, such as schools and hospitals, may use cats, dogs, and small rodents.

When choosing which types of animals to use in our therapy, we made two choices because they suit our facility, they are properly trained, and they are healthy and clean.

Goats

It has become a popular pastime to watch online videos of adorable goats playing and interacting with people. We create opportunities for people to care for and nurture our goats, who live onsite at our facility.

Pigs

Therapy pigs are trained to be gentle and loving with people who work with them. Several pigs live at our residential center, offering the opportunity to engage with them as part of therapy.

How Can Animal-Assisted Therapy Help?

The ways animal-assisted therapy can help include reducing or eliminating symptoms such as depression, anxiety, moodiness, isolation, and difficulty forming bonds. It can also improve a person’s social skills and ability to trust others.

Animal-Assisted Therapy During Residential Treatment

People enrolled in residential treatment live at a facility for an average of 30 to 60 days. They stay in a beautiful and modern homelike space that includes land.

We are able to keep our goats and pigs on our property, making it easy for our clients to spend time with them. Many people find working with and caring for our sweet goats and pigs to be one of their favorite types of therapy and a real bonding experience.

Animal-Assisted Therapy In Conjunction with Traditional Methods

When someone struggles with a mental health disorder, they typically make the most progress when they participate in more than one type of therapy. At Robles Ranch, we offer several types of therapy so we can design the right plan that targets each person’s unique needs.

Other therapies we offer include:

We also provide prescription medications that can help each person minimize their symptoms of mental illness.

AAT Statistics in the United States

A group of studies using animal-assisted therapy for mental health all showed that it helped improve depression and neurological disorders. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers animal-assisted therapy at more than half of its facilities, and it is one of the most popular types of therapy to treat mental illnesses incurred by veterans.
