How Can Family Therapy Help in Mental Health Treatment?

People who experience mental health disorders often find it difficult to communicate with their family about what they feel and think. If family members back away out of confusion or not knowing what to do, it takes away some of the most valuable support the individual needs

Family therapy allows family members to come together and work as a team to help elevate the loved one’s ability to improve their mental health.

A therapist leads each session and provides a safe and moderated environment for each person to speak openly. Everyone can express their concerns, fears, and emotions without fear of judgment. This new way of communicating allows people to heal old wounds and prevent new discord from developing. Everyone can move forward knowing how to talk to and support the person in treatment.

Types of Family Therapy We Provide

We offer several types of family therapy to help give each individual and their family the best ways to help improve their family unit and how they relate to each other. The types of family therapy we offer include:

Family Systems Therapy: This type of therapy helps people come together as a family unit to help the person with the mental illness minimize their symptoms and heal. Everyone learns about their family dynamic and individual actions, and how to improve them.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT teaches people to examine their feelings and thoughts and understand how they influence their reactions. Any necessary changes can be adapted.

Psychoeducation: Psychoeducation therapy includes the therapists educating people about their specific diagnosis, their symptoms, and how to treat them.

Narrative Therapy: Narrative therapy teaches people to view themselves as separate from their mental illness. This distance allows them to see their disorder from a new perspective and understand what purpose it serves.

The Role of Family in Residential Treatment

When family therapy begins, the therapist will explain how it works and what is expected of each person. Sometimes the family will engage in a roundabout discussion in which everyone will converse as a group. Other times, the therapist may focus on communicating with one family member at a time.

Each family member can talk about how their loved one’s mental illness impacts them. The therapist will help people to communicate their emotions and ask any questions they have about the specifics of the mental health disorder their family member experiences. This can include the symptoms of the disorder and how to react to them. From there, any co-dependent relationships can be identified and work done to discontinue them.

What to Expect During Family Therapy

The therapist may go around the room and ask each person how they feel impacted by their loved one’s mental illness.

Discussions may take place, such as when to step up and offer support and when to back off and give the family member some space.

Even if a person feels embarrassed, they should feel free to ask any questions they have and allow the therapist to help settle any disagreements that have spiraled due to the mental illness or from other causes. This strengthens everyone so they can communicate efficiently and learn not to backslide into unhealthy, old habits.

Why Robles Ranch?

Robles Ranch doesn’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment served up to a large community at one time.

Our luxury residential treatment setting includes only six beds, so we can devote time to working with each person we treat. We get to know the person who comes to us for help and provide them with a specially designed menu of therapies that will help them meet their treatment goals. Our team of therapists uses their experience to provide a compassionate place to heal.
