What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy operates from the idea that the human body can store trauma and painful emotions internally. By working with a person’s body to help them release the trauma and other feelings and events held within it, the person can begin to feel more in balance emotionally. Several techniques are used during sessions guided by a trained therapist.

Somatic Therapy Techniques

A therapist who provides somatic therapy can employ various techniques to help the person alleviate their symptoms.

These techniques include:

  • Breathwork: Effective in helping people fight off anxiety and other symptoms, breathwork teaches the individual to control their breathing. This causes their nervous system to regulate.
  • Gentle Movement: Yoga, stretching exercises, and more can help people release trauma and experience sensations of peace.
  • Body Scanning: This helps the therapist identify areas of the body that hold the person’s tension and release it.
  • Pendulation: The therapist guides the person from a relaxed state to emotions triggered by trauma and stress and then back to feeling relaxed.
  • Titration: The individual recalls a traumatic memory while the therapist notes part of the body that expresses physical sensations while they discuss it.

What Types of Mental Disorders Can Somatic Therapy Help Treat?

Somatic therapy proves effective in helping a variety of mental health disorders. This therapy can be particularly effective for people who struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but it can also work well for people who have anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders.

The Science Behind the Mind-Body Connection

While some might initially wonder if somatic therapy can really work, there is science behind this approach to healing mental health disorders. Research shows a strong connection between a person’s physical and emotional health.

A person’s autonomic nervous system (ANS) is comprised of three areas:

  1. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which controls the person’s fight, flight, or freeze responses.
  2. The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which controls a person’s heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, rest, and how it restores bodily functions.
  3. The enteric system (ENS) also influences the nervous system. When a person undergoes a traumatic event, it can cause their ANS to become faulty and influence reactions such as anxiety and PTSD.

Somatic therapy can help a person identify their body’s signals and alter how they work so they can feel safer and ease their symptoms of poor mental health.

What to Expect During Somatic Therapy Sessions

The first session of somatic therapy will include the therapist talking about how the process works and setting goals. They will ask about a person’s history with trauma or other events that may contribute to their poor mental health. The therapist will determine which parts of the person’s body may be holding onto the damage done and will talk about what types of touch or movement they will use.

Sessions often begin with grounding techniques to help center the person. The therapist will guide them through the different techniques during the sessions and then help them return to their regular state of mind at the end of the appointment..

Signs Your Body is Releasing Trauma

As someone moves through the process of somatic therapy, they will experience signs that the trauma they hold in their bodies is slipping out. As this happens, certain symptoms will occur that include trembling, yawning, and crying, which result in feeling relief. The therapist will help the person process their feelings.
