What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a serious mental health disorder that does not have a cure, but its symptoms can be managed with professional treatment. This mental illness is characterized by a person having difficulty determining what’s real because of limitations in how they process things. Many people with schizophrenia have hallucinations and trouble communicating with others.

Those with severe symptoms may need to live with family or in a clinical setting, while others can lead fairly independent lives. Someone with schizophrenia may find that experiencing their symptoms at work or in school compromises their ability to do well in either realm.

Signs and Symptoms of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia causes people to have specific signs and symptoms. The severity of them differs from person to person and includes:

  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Seeming to have no emotional reactions
  • Often quiet
  • Isolating from others
  • Difficulty thinking and making decisions
  • Jumping from topic to topic during conversations
  • Making nonsensical comments during conversations or to themselves
  • Difficulty at work or being unable to hold down a job
  • Trouble having healthy, long-term relationships
  • Schoolwork is negatively impacted

Programs for Schizophrenia Treatment at Robles Ranch

Robles Ranch provides residential treatment for schizophrenia, which means the person moves in temporarily at our homelike facility. This allows them to get away from daily stressors and triggers and concentrate on minimizing their symptoms with the help of a dedicated staff of licensed therapists.

How long a person stays in residential treatment depends on the length and severity of their symptoms and how well they do while under our care. Most people stay for 30 days, while others stay longer if they have not yet met their treatment goals. We chose our location to give people a sanctuary for healing among the peace and beauty of nature.

Our program includes gourmet meals, housekeeping, and a place to wind down after therapy sessions. We also include support animals like goats and pigs that act as journey companions.

FAQ About Schizophrenia

A mental health professional will provide a comprehensive assessment that includes talking about the severity and type of symptoms the person has and how long they have had them. When a diagnosis is made, a plan can be discussed to help the person get the specific treatment they need.

The most effective therapies include Individual Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Group Therapy. Family therapy can help loved ones understand the disorder and offer effective support.

Medications provide tremendous support to help people maintain a sense of balance and control some of their symptoms.

  • Schizophrenia is most commonly diagnosed during a person’s late teen years to early thirties.
  • Approximately 0.25% to 0.64% of people in the U.S. have schizophrenia.
  • Almost 5% of people with schizophrenia commit suicide, which is much higher than the rate for people who do not have the disorder.

Treatment involves attending different therapies that help people understand their mental illness, develop healthy coping skills, and reach their full potential in living an independent life.
