What is an Inner Child?

An inner child is a part of a person who becomes part of their psyche that can have tremendous input on how they feel, think, and behave as adults.

Psychologist Carl Jung described an inner child as a part of a person’s subconscious that drives many of the life actions and reactions they experience. This is greatly due to both positive and negative events that people go through as children that stay with them and become part of their internalized belief system.

What is Inner Child Work?

Inner child therapy is the process of finding and reconnecting with who a person was when they were a child.

The therapist helps the person look for connections between things that happened when they were little and how they influence how they think, act, and feel as adults. This often includes healing unresolved childhood trauma. Inner child work is done through conversations, visual and audio stimulation, and other techniques.

How to Know When Your Inner Child is Activated

Therapists ask questions about a person’s childhood and help them channel or converse with themselves when they were a kid. An inner child is activated when a dialogue is established, and the adult can access how they used to feel, think, and act.

Inner Child Work During Residential Treatment

When someone stays with us in our residential program, they can take advantage of several types of therapy that help them heal their inner child.

The types of therapy we offer include:

How to Care for Your Inner Child

Whether a person is in treatment or has concluded it, they can still practice ways to care for their inner child.

They can establish a dialogue with themselves at a certain age and ask them how they feel. It’s important to speak calmly and respectfully to the person’s inner child and make them feel cared for and loved. Thoughts like “I know you did the best you could” and “You went through a lot, and I know it was scary” can help open up memories and self-validation.

Understanding Inner Child Work and Unresolved Trauma

Inner child therapy identifies events that happened to a person as a child that are unresolved and works to heal them.

For example, a child who was physically or verbally abused will carry feelings of inadequacy, shame, and anger into their adulthood. Establishing contact with the younger self allows the person the ability to embrace the fact that their needs were not met at the time but can be resolved through inner child work done today.

When the adult knows their inner child has been validated and recognized for what they endured, it can help them heal from the damage done back then and what was carried over into adulthood. This can mean a reduction in symptoms like depression, anxiety, moodiness, anger, and the desire to isolate.
