Robles Ranch is a Joint Commission–accredited residential mental health facility in Paso Robles, California. Our clinical team doesn’t just prepare you for discharge. They prepare you for what comes next with a personalized plan, a warm referral, and a clear path forward.

For clients who need a high level of support as they transition out of residential care, a Partial Hospitalization Program is often the right next step.

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

A Partial Hospitalization Program is a structured, full-day mental health treatment program. Clients attend five to seven days per week, typically for six or more hours per day, then return home or to a supportive living environment each evening.

PHP includes individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric medication management, and skills-based programming. The intensity rivals residential treatment, but clients sleep outside the facility and begin reintegrating into daily life at their own pace.

PHP is one of the most robust levels of outpatient mental health care available.

PHP vs. IOP — Understanding the Difference

PHP and IOP are both step-down levels of care after residential treatment. The primary difference is intensity.

PHP involves full days of structured programming, most days of the week. It suits clients who need close clinical oversight and a high volume of therapeutic contact. An intensive outpatient program (IOP) involves fewer hours per week (typically nine to fifteen) and works well for clients whose condition has stabilized and who are ready for more independence.

Think of PHP as the more intensive bridge between residential care and everyday life, and IOP as the next bridge after that. Many clients move through both levels in sequence as their recovery progresses.

Who is IOP Appropriate For?

Medical Director Dr. Alejandro Alva, MD, and our licensed therapists assess each client’s clinical progress, living situation, and support network to determine the right level of step-down care. When PHP is the right fit, our team identifies appropriate programs in your area, confirms insurance coverage, and coordinates a warm handoff to the receiving clinical team.

Joint Commission accreditation means our discharge planning meets a rigorous, nationally recognized standard of care. Continuity across levels of treatment is part of what that accreditation requires and part of what our team delivers.

Who is PHP Right For After Residential Treatment?

PHP is a strong fit for clients who have completed residential treatment but still benefit from intensive, daily clinical structure.

It works well for people who are medically stable and safe to sleep outside a clinical setting, but whose symptoms call for consistent monitoring and a full schedule of therapeutic activity. PHP is commonly used to support recovery from depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and other mood and behavioral health conditions.

It also works well for clients whose home environment is stable and supportive, and who have some capacity to manage evenings independently, even while continuing intensive daytime treatment.

The Mental Health Continuum of Care

Effective mental health treatment follows a continuum; a sequence of care levels that shifts as your needs change.

Residential treatment provides the most intensive foundation. PHP comes next, offering near-residential intensity with increasing independence. IOP follows, with fewer weekly hours and more room for daily life. Standard outpatient therapy and ongoing psychiatric care continue the journey from there.

Robles Ranch supports this full arc. We believe that getting better is a process and that the right care at every stage makes the difference between short-term relief and lasting change. Our team actively connects clients with step-down programs across San Luis Obispo County and throughout California.
